The natural beauty of the area is a major attraction factor; there are gorgeous, sandy beaches along the coast, footpaths of exquisite beauty, caverns, gorges as well as wetland habitats (Kournas Lake). As for entertainment, there are plenty of traditional restaurants and cafes in every village where one can taste the famous Cretan cuisine and mingle with the locals. In more developed places like Kalyves, Almyrida or Georgioupolis one can enjoy night life and shopping as well as local events and festivals. Such places also offer many more amenities to ensure comfortable vacations, like doctor’s surgeries, pharmacies, post offices and banks. For a more cosmopolitan taste of life, of course, one has to spend some time in the city of Chania - there is bus connection to and from but hiring a taxi or a holiday car would be even more convenient.
