Everybody learns at different speeds. It won’t take long for you to be able to exchange greetings and ask for things in shops. It will take longer for you to understand what Greeks are saying to you! • How long will it be before I can read and write Greek competently? Success at reading and writing usually comes before being able to speak confidently (unless perhaps you are working here and are speaking and listening all day long) • I want only to learn Greek conversation. Is this possible? It is possible but not advisable. It is important to have at least a basic understanding of the language in order to be able to speak confidently and correctly. • Will there be any ongoing assessment? Individual feedback is given regularly throughout the courses. More formal testing can be done if wanted or needed. • Do I gain any qualifications such as a certificate of proficiency to show prospective employers? Most employers ask for a reference from the school certifying your competency at various levels – the school of course will provide this. There are Greek state exams which we can help you prepare for should you wish to pursue this route. • Will I be able to go at my own pace? With individual tuition this is not a problem. The largest class size is 4 people – within the class nobody will be rushed to move on until they are ready. • I didn’t do much grammar at school. Will I be able to cope with Greek grammar? Many English people are a little concerned at first about the grammar, especially where they have not done much of it in early schooling. However experience has shown that there are very few people indeed who are unable to cope. • I learnt another European foreign language at school. Will this help me learn Greek? Yes. • Will I have to do homework and if so how much? Some homework is necessary to practise your skills. We are aware that some people have busy lives and we try to accommodate that by giving only a small amount. Some people may like to do more! • Can you offer experiences to meet and talk with Greek people? Yes – there are many opportunities. • Will there be opportunities to meet other students in a social way? Yes. |
