"Filomathia" Language Centre is a newly established institution (2007) whose aim is to make learning Greek an unforgettable experience. Teaching the Greek Language has been of ultimate importance to us respectively to its History and position among the oldest and richest languages of the world emphasizing on its modern aspect and daily use. Our vision is to contribute to spreading this language worldwide and make Greek learners realize the inner connections of language and thinking. Thus, our courses are designed in a way that students always feel comfortable using Greek in both speaking and writing and they are enthusiastic about discovering new aspects of the language they have chosen to learn.

Special Courses

Learning Greek is not only about learning the language. Important subjects of the Greek Culture and History as well as specialized terminology on Medicine, Science and Law are taught as part of the Language at our school. These courses can be held both in Greek and in English in case the language level of the participants is not yet adequate to support the undistracted flow of the course. As we have seen so far, students usually take up such course after they have completed the Intermediate level and it is time for them to enhance their skills by adding knowledge from other surrounding fields of the Greek Language. A series of these courses consists of seven sessions, which can either be held daily or weekly according to participants’ preferences. For those who view learning a language as part of a whole civilization the following courses might cover their interests.

Special courses can start any time during the school year and their duration can be extended after request.

As for history, Arts and Philosophy, students can choose a brief covering of all history periods or focus on any specific one under negotiation with the teacher.

Regular courses are mainly designed for foreign students who permanently live on Crete or spend here long periods throughout the year. Lessons are held twice a week so that students and particularly adult ones have free time between lessons. Speed of teaching varies from group to group depending on the class and the length of these courses are open-ended. However, the suggested duration of attendance can be no less than two months if students really want to see progress. Before registering each student is interviewed and placed into a group of his level (Beginners, Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced and Proficiency). During the lessons students are always welcome to discuss their progress or weaknesses with their teacher and all together decide on the specific language points they want to focus on. Whichever the level of the course is, emphasis is always given on both linguistic features (grammar, vocabulary, syntax etc) and practical use of the language while students are encouraged to speak and build confidence at least in every day conversations.

Conversational Greek

After reaching a certain level of Greek, when at least fundamental Grammar and basic Vocabulary is known, practice through speaking and putting all knowledge gained together is the best way to polish and improve one’s skills. These courses are held once a week and are addressed to those who want to take a break from regular classes and make sure they can command Greek at their level before they move to the next one. Students are free to choose their own classmates, friends from other groups perhaps and establish a warm class where they will free comfortable to speak and set up conversations on any subject they wish. The teacher now becomes a guide and coordinator boosting up students’ confidence in speaking, imagination, creativity and flexibility in expressing oneself in Greek.

The cost of these courses depends on the number of participants in order to make it more approachable to the majority of foreign students and particularly the foreign residents of Crete.
